Futurepast Client in Ukraine Achieves Country’s First ISO 14001 Certification

Concern Stirol, a chemical, pharmaceutical, and consumer goods company located in Gorlovka, Ukraine, received certification in January 2002 from BVQI for its ISO 14001-based environmental management system.

The company became the first organization of any kind to achieve ISO 14001 certification in Ukraine. Certification came after a two-year implementation effort that was assisted by Futurepast: Inc. of Arlington, Virginia, and UkrnTEC, a consulting firm based in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Futurepast’s president, John Shideler, made five trips to Ukraine in 2000 and 2001 under the auspices of EcoLinks, a grant-making organization sponsored by the US Agency for International Development.

The company’s Chief of Ecology during the implementation effort was Sergei Lizenko, who has since retired. Mr. Lizenko said of Futurepast’s assistance that “our success [was] due in no small part to the role that John has played in guiding us through the design and implementation process.”

Concern Stirol can be accessed through its website, as can UkrnTEC, Stirol’s other implementation partner.
